Parish Visit to Oxburgh Hall, 19th June 2008

After Mass, held by kind permission of Henry & Mary Bedingfeld in their family
chapel.

During our tour of the hall, some of us got to wedge ourselves into a 'priest hole'
and we were allowed an exception to the 'no photographs' rule, just this once...

It's actually quite large inside, but entrance requires a somewhat undignified wriggle
through a tiny gap where the 'privy' used to be - seen here under the wooden beam.
There's an electric light in there now, but any priest hiding in fear of his life
from
Elizabethan priest-hunters (or 'pursuivants' in the language of the time) would
have
had no natural light whatsoever, save perhaps a small candle in one of the niches
in the
walls, should he have dared to light it.
